It’s really great to hear from Mary on all of this, it’s crazy that she only feels safe discussing it now. Honestly I can’t even wrap my head around what all of that would have been like and I don’t want to. Holy cats. I kind of had a moment when I heard her mention “Camden Town Rain”... I was probably 13 or 14 when my friend got ahold of a Kill Rock Stars compilation tape from another friend who was in a band. (I’m part of that weird Oregon Trail generation interlude between Gen X & Millennials even though I’m technically a Millennial) ANYWAY...it had to have been 1994 or 1995, I was a HUGE Nirvana & Nine Inch Nails fan, and was into anything from that world, especially Riot Grrl. I lived in Jackson, Mississippi and would just eat up new music. So anyway somehow we got ahold of this tape and there was a song on it called “Camden Town Rain” by Mary Lou Lord and I couldn’t stop listening to it. I was just a baby and still trying to figure out who I was and something about that song scratched off some layer of emotion in me, and I became obsessed with it. I didn’t know who Mary was then, and was probably one of 3 people in Mississippi who had ever heard that tape/song at the time, so it always held a special place in my heart. The tape didn’t belong to me and I hadn’t heard it again. For years I tried to find it but couldn’t, then as I got older I forgot the name of the song and who sang it, although by a certain point I knew who Mary Lou Lord is. Anyway, I found it, listened to it last night and somebody was chopping onions in my bed last night. The recording was the same, exactly how I remembered it. Now it all makes sense but had I known it was about Kurt, at that age, I would have had a fangirl aneurysm.
